PERSEVERANCE
Juana Inés de Asbaje y Ramírez de Santanilla was born in San Miguel Nepantla (Mexico) on November 12, 1651. She spent her childhood in Amecameca, Yecapix. da, and Panoaya. She learned to read and write at the age of three thanks to her older sister, who taught her in secret from her mother. From a very young age she became fond of reading, thanks to her grandfather’s library, where she spent a lot of time. When she was seven years old, she tried to persuade her mother to send her to school disguised as a boy, since at that time girls were not allowed to have access to such studies. At the death of her grandfather, in 1656, her mother sent her to live with her sister in Mexico City, where she learned Latin at an astonishing speed with the bachelor Martin de Olivas. Her enormous talent allowed her, between 1664 and 1665, to enter the court of Viceroy Antonio Sebastián de Toledo, whose wife, Leonor de Carreto, became one of her most important Later, she entered the order of Saint Jerome and acquired the name that made her famous: Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz. She lived in the Convent of Santa Paula, where she had more than four thousand books, musical instruments, maps, and measuring devices; It was there that she acquired knowledge of mathematics, language, philosophy, myth low, history, theology, music, painting, and cooking. In the convent she was allowed to study, write, hold meetings, and receive visitors.
Today we continue to marvel as we observe the perfection of her metric and her sharpness in talking about the great issues of the human heart. How did this woman achieve such a high level of knowledge without taking classes in an educational institution? Persevering in her goals, fighting for what she wanted, not letting herself be overcome by circumstance. She even confesses that, on occasion, she imposed for herself the rule of cutting off four or six fingers of hair and, in the time it took to grow back, she had to dominate a certain subject; if she did not succeed, she would return to the same measure to reach her goal. She died on April 17, 1695.
Life is full of challenges. But we’re not alone. God has called us to persevere: «When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, I nor shall the flame scorch you» (Isaiah 43:2).
