«For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us» (Romans 5:7, 8).
YESTERDAY WE SAID THAT LOVE, far from being blind, sees just fine. Today u we will say that love does strange things.
What do we mean by «the strange things about love»? Take, for example, the case of Jacob, the biblical patriarch. How can we explain the fact that he had worked for seven years for the right to marry Rachel, and yet the Scripture say that «they seemed only a few days to him» (Genesis 29:20)? Seven years is a lot of days, but not for the one who is in love!
How can we explain that Jonathan had no problem with David becoming the king of Israel, while he was content to be «second in command» (1 Samuel 23:17, NET)?
How can we understand that Ruth, the Moabitess, has left behind her homeland, her relatives, her roots, her gods and all out of love for her mother-in-law? We all remember her words: «Entreat me not to leave you, or to turn back from following after you; for wherever you go, I will go; and wherever you lodge, I will lodge; your people shall be my people, and your God, my God» (Ruth 1:16). There doesn’t seem to be any logic in her decision, but those are the strange things about love.
You can already imagine the following example. How could God send His Son into this world, knowing that He would be mistreated, humiliated, savagely beaten, and finally crucified? Can someone please explain? Can anyone understand how, even though we are sinners, you and I are called children of God?
There is no way to explain this mystery. However, there are at least two things we can do. One is to accept by faith the fact that «God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us» (Romans 5:8). That is, to accept that out of love, God can see in you and me what no one else can see: human beings of such value as to justify the sacrifice of Jesus, our Lord.
The other thing we can do is thank God for His indescribable gift (2 Corinthians 9:15)! Thank Him for that precious gift He gave us in the Person of His beloved Son. And this is something we can do right now!
Thank You, heavenly Father, because You did not wait for me to reconcile with You to make me the object of Your supreme love.
Thank You for seeing in me a being of great value; of so much value that Your beloved Son died on a cross where I should have died.
