For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God-not by works, so that no one can boast. EPHESIANS 2:8, 9, NIV
Once in Oahu, Hawaii, we decided to rent a car so that we could get around and visit different parts of the island. Our boys were still little at his time, so we were always looking for things that they would also enjoy. Our plan on this particular day was to drive clockwise around the perimeter of the island along a highway that hugs the coast for long sections. That means the first major thing we needed to do was cross over a heavily wooded mountain range between Oahu and Kaneohe.
As we drove over the pass, we noticed that there was a pull-overlook area. Since we weren’t in a hurry, we pulled off and decide to check it out. There was a parking lot and a path that went a few hundred feet to a lookout platform that looked over the Kaneohe and the beach beyond. As we started walking toward the platform, we notice a warning sign posted next to the sidewalk. It was a warning about bees in the area. I had never sees a warning sign about bees before, so we weren’t really sure what to make of it. We made it to the lookout and enjoyed the view and took some pictures. At that point, as you can probably imagine, a bee came along and sting my oldest son that hand. Bee stings are painful, and he cried in pain.
As his parents, we felt horrible that this had happened. We felt even worse since we were given fair warning that this could happen. I remember wishing I could take his place and bear that pain on his behalf. Why would I want to do that? You know the answer. It’s because of my deep love for him. It’s exactly what Jesus did for us. Because of His deep love for us, He took our punishment on the cross so that we could be saved. The price of salvation has been paid. The question we must answer now is where we will live today accepting that wonderful gift.
