THE SERGEANT’S COURAGE

Now go out and encourage your men» (2 Samuel 19:7).

The battlefield at Gettysburg shook with the rumble of cannon and the shouts of men. Southern forces poured over Northern defenses. Lieutenant Frank Haskell knew that if some-thing weren’t done immediately, the North would lose.

«Major,» Lieutenant Haskell shouted at the brigade leader, «lead your men over the crest.»

Major Webb shook his head. «By the rule of battle my place is in the rear of my men.»

Haskell nodded angrily. «I see your place is in the rear of men.» Then he noticed a low-ranking officer standing nearby. «Sergeant,» he ordered. «Forward with your color.»

The lower-ranked officer seized the flag and ran for the enemy’s line. One by one, then as a group, the soldiers followed the brave sergeant into battle, fought the enemy, and won.

Faced any foes lately? Got bad habits attacking you day after day? The same thing is happening to every junior. The battle rages. More and more «high-ranking» teens and preteens are refusing to mount a counterattack. «You,» God shouts, «lead your friends, your family, your classmates. They will follow.» How do you answer?

Are you like Major Webb, who chose to cower behind brave men? Or are you like the sergeant who seized the flag and ran straight at the enemy?

Don’t worry if your parents aren’t rich or powerful. And don’t be concerned if you don’t live in the grandest house or ride in the coolest car. In the battle against evil, the only thing that matters is your courage. Grab the flag. Gather your army. Charge!
