And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. ROMANS 12:2, NKJV
I recently visited France with my family, and we went to visit the Mer de Glace, or the Sea of Ice. It’s a fitting name because it is the largest glacier in the western Alps. The glacier is located deep in the French Alps, so we had to drive to a town called Chamonix, which lies in a valley surrounded by tall mountain peaks. The glacier was on the other side of a mountain from Chamonix. Chamonix is a charming town that has hosted the winter Olympics twice. When we arrived in Chamonix, we then had to find a small train depot at the edge of the town that had a unique little old train that would take visitors up and over the mountains. We bought our ticket and waited for the old wooden train to arrive. Soon we were on our way climbing up the steep mountainside. The train went through tunnels, forests, and along sharp cliffs as it climbed more than two thousand eight hundred feet toward the glacier.
The train finally pulled into a little station on the other side of the mountain. As we exited the station, the sidewalk led us right to the edge of an incredible overlook. In front of us was the glacier, extending four miles down the mountain in an impressive, yes, sea of ice. The glacier is constantly moving downhill from the pressure of its own weight and gravity. Some parts of the glacier are up to six hundred feet deep, so imagine how heavy that much ice would be as it slowly slides downhill. As it slides downhill, huge cracks, called crevasses, form. From the lookout there was more to explore, including a chairlift that goes right down to the ice field! From there, we could visit a cave that is cut out of the ice each year! Pressure from gravity pushes a glacier down a mountain, but destructive peer pressure from your friends and from this world can really mess up your life.
Don’t get tricked into following this world; follow GOD instead.
