THE SALTPETER OF THE SEA

«And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away» (Revelation 21:4).

What is the first thing you would like to do when you get to heaven? Maybe hug Jesus? Or look for loved ones you lost through death? And after that? Have you started thinking about what it will be like to live on the New Earth?

Months ago, I started asking my friends these same questions and I received amazing answers. My friend Tino, who is a computer engineer, told me that he wanted to find out how God stores information. I would never have thought of such a thing, but Tino is fascinated by this question. I imagine God will have a cloud with unlimited capacity! Another friend told me she wants to have her own herd of wolves, and I wish I could understand the language of the animals.

Writer Joni Eareckson Tada, who suffered a cervical fracture in her youth that left her a quadriplegic for the rest of her life, said in her book Heaven that one of the great joys of heaven will be to receive a glorified and immortal body: «One day there will be no more bulging abdomens or bald heads. There will be no varicose veins or crow’s feet. There will be no cellulite or elastic stockings. Forget broad thighs and wide hips; a quick leap over the tombstone and you will get the body you always dreamed of, excellent physical condition, a smooth and slender body.»

I’m convinced we don’t spend enough time thinking and talking about heaven. When my sisters and I were girls, the best time of year for my mom was when we went on vacation to the beach. She began to pack some things weeks in advance, moving ahead of the adventure. My mom had her eyes fixed on the sea and could almost smell the saltpeter, even if we were sweating in the hot city of Buenos Aires. I admit that when I was a child I was amused by her impatience; Mom would sometimes pack things we still needed. However, I now understand it. She longed for the sea, the sound of seagulls, and rest with the family. I want to long for heaven like that!

Dear Lord, thank You for the hope of heaven!
Please saturate my mind and imagination with the colors, sounds, and smells of heaven. I want to live every day longing for my real home.
