«He who has pity on the poor lends to the Lord, and He will pay back what he has given» (Proverbs 19:17).
One Saturday in August 2020, my sister lnés was taking part in Sabbath School online during the coronavirus quarantine. In the midst of an animated conversation, one of the participants said, «We often talk about helping each other, but we don’t always put it into practice.» At that very moment, a clear and inspired thought went through her mind: «So and so needs two thousand pesos.» At the end of Sabbath School, lnés noticed that she had two thousand pesos and she put it aside to give to that person. During the week, my sister called her Internet company to complain about the amount of her bill. The company unexpectedly offered to give her a discount that, over the course of a year, would save her ten thousand pesos. «l gave God two thousand pesos, and He gave me ten thousand,» lnés told me.
If we have a mentality of scarcity, we will focus on our limited resources and miss out on witnessing our miracles. «We often feel that, in giving, we lose,» Stormie Omartian wrote in Just Enough Light for the Step I’m On: Trusting God in the Tough Times. «We think: If I didn’t have to give this, I would have more for myself. However, that is the attitude that will make us lose. The Bible says that if we give to God, we will have everything we need in our lives. If not, we won’t.» When we are not generous, we are actually cutting off the flow of God’s blessings. Of course, He still loves us; however, «the treasures of God’s abundance will only open for those who begin the process by opening themselves up by giving,» she added.
God wants to give us a mentality of abundance which focuses on His unlimited resources and results in a generous and abundant life. When we live like this, as Fito Paez’s song says, the returns «are always more.» Being generous, trusting in divine providence, is the best «deal» we can make.
Dear Lord, Your resources are unlimited. You bless me until I have an overabundance, until my arms can’t hold any more, until the house is filled with food, light, and joy. Help me remember this when I get a chance to give. I want to open my hands and my heart to give generously.
