THE RED CROSS

«Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away» (Hebrews 2: l).

HEBREWS 2 WARNS against being negligent or deviating from the faith. The message of salvation was preached by the Lord Himself and His apostles and was confirmed by many miracles and wonders.

Paul emphasized that Christ is sovereign, that He created all things, that He takes care of everyone and has a mission for each of us. However, to accomplish the plan of salvation, He submitted to the will of the Father, becoming a little lower than the angels. Rebellion contaminated everyone with the virus of sin. Only Christ could save us, not in our sins, but from our sins. He expects us to distance ourselves from sin every day and to draw closer to Him.

Christ’s ministry was victorious, and Satan’s power was destroyed forever. In a little while, he will no longer have dominion over us.

Jean Henri Dunant is considered to be «the father of the Red Cross.» He was born in 1828 in Geneva, Switzerland, to a family of good economic position. As a young man, he participated in the «Geneva Society for Alms giving» to support the sick, poor, and imprisoned. At the Battle of Solferino when there were not enough professionals to care for the wounded, Dunant helped alleviate their pain and suffering a lot. After that experience, he took the initiative for all countries to train and organize volunteers to help serve wounded warriors. Thus, he founded the Red Cross.

The organization’s great initial support faded away. Dunant lost his assets and lived  in poverty. In 1901, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize along with Frédéric Passy from France. «No one deserves this honor more than this man for having established an international organization to comfort those who are wounded in battle,» they said in acknowledgment.

So much more can be said of the One who did not accept defeat or want to allow those who were wounded by sin to perish on the battlefield. So much more can be said of the One who became poor so that we might be rich in Him. So much more can be said of the One whose reward will be to see all the wounded rescued and redeemed forever enter into eternity.

Dunant founded the Red Cross, but the cross of Christ became red with His blood. That blood should have actually been ours.
