«Is vain for you to rise up early, To sit up late, To eat the bread of sorrows; For so He gives His beloved sleep» (Psalm 127:2).
When Lana Vasquez discovered that children were being bought and sold for three hundred U.S. dollars in Bangkok, Thailand, she knew she had to do something. Lana was only twenty-four years old and had just recently converted to Christianity after leaving behind a lifetime of addictions. However, she accepted the challenge of traveling to Thailand to help a missionary couple who were building a children’s home. At the beginning, Lana planned to stay for only a few months, but she became the director of the home and began caring for fifty-two at-risk children. In time, Lana and her team expanded their ministry and included preventive, rescue, and emotional restoration campaigns. Today, her organization, «Life Impact International,» has spent more than seventeen years rescuing children from human trafficking.
I had the privilege of chatting with Lana, and she recounted one of the most challenging moments of her experience: «Years ago, we were the only organization that accepted babies. Babies were being sold for $18 at the border. The government would call us and say, «We have another baby.» I had about sixty children back then and I could barely feed them.» Lana and the children were crowded into a small, rented house and she didn’t have enough money to buy rice. Then some friends from college invited her to spend a few days with them. As they chatted, Lana told them about her dream of building a new home with a large yard for the children to play. Together, they calculated that Lana would need about half a million dollars to build it. Lana went to sleep sad that day. How could she raise so much money?
Her friends woke her up abruptly the next morning. They had found two people willing to donate money to build the home! «l felt God say to me, ‘l did all this while you were sleeping; you don’t have to stress. These are My children. Just have faith and obey me,’ » Lana told me. Let us move forward with faith and obedience today. God doesn’t lack resources. With donations, Lana bought land (which was going to be used to build a brothel) of more than ten hectares, built a home for the children, and called it «The Promised Land.»
Dear Lord, I thank You because when You give me a spiritual inheritance and a call, You also train me and supply my needs. I trust in You. You give rest to those You love.
