«But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed» (Isaiah 53:5).
JESSICA WAS ONLY A YEAR AND A HALF OLD when she accidentally fell into a well in Midland, Texas, on October 14, 1987. Because of media coverage of the incident, the whole world witnessed in detail the frantic efforts of rescuers to save her life. After 58 hours of arduous labor, and a lot of tension, Jessica was finally rescued. Today, a picture (which was incidentally awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1988) can still be seen of her rescue, in which she is shown in the arms of one of her rescuers.
Young Jessica’s experience was documented and preserved for posterity in numerous newspaper and magazine articles. It even inspired the creation of songs, books and movies. But the scars that remain on her body are the ones that tell her story; the ones that most remind her of how close she came to death, and how her team of rescuers intervened in such a timely manner.
It cannot be otherwise. There is nothing better than a scar to bring to mind the experiences we would rather not have lived through. There is nothing better than a scar to remind us that, in spite of the painful experience we had, we are still alive. That is precisely what Jessica McClure said one time as she celebrated an anniversary of her miraculous rescue: «I am proud of my scars. They tell me that I survived.»
Are there scars in your body, in your heart? What stories do they tell? The story of an accident that almost took your life? Stories of shattered dreams? No matter what they tell, the important thing is that you are still alive. And because you are alive today, you can thank God, not only for those scars, but also for His beloved Son’s scars; the ones Jesus endured to forgive you and grant you everlasting life. Today’s verse talks about those scars: «But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed» (Isaiah 53:5).
Thank you, Jesus, for the wounds of Calvary! Thank you because, although you could have stayed in heaven, you chose to suffer so that You could save us! In addition to declaring the high price You paid to save us, «through the eternal ages the wounds of Calvary will show forth His praise and declare His power. «—The Great Controversy, ch. 43, p. 674,
Thank you Jesus, because Your wounds tell us how much You love us;
and because by Your stripes were healed.»
Blessed be Your name, Lord, now and forevermore!
