«When wisdom enters your heart, and knowledge is pleasant to your soul, discretion will preserve you; understanding will keep you» (Proverbs 2:10, 11).
WISDOM
He was born and raised in the prosperous metropolis of Tarsus, in Asia Minor (Acts 21:39), a city that was famous for its philosophy, science, education and culture; a place where Greek, Roman and Jewish elements fused together. His father named him Saul and he belonged to the tribe of Benjamin. He also taught Saul to be a Hebrew with deep spiritual beliefs. However, his father somehow obtained Roman citizenship and, with that, opened up great opportunities for Saul to develop.
During his childhood, Saul learned about his faith and defended it in front of his peers. From a very young age he marveled at the solemn Jewish ceremonies. One of his great privileges was to read the Scripture rolls, and he was thrilled to do so. Likewise, he became one of the best students of Jewish traditions and faith and was praised by the great Hebrew teachers of his time (Galatians 1:14).
Young Saul’s virtues were pondered by the Scribes and Pharisees of his time, and he was soon promoted to study at the feet of Gamaliel, a famous Hebrew scholar and grandson of the great Rabbi Hillel (Acts 22:3). His teacher’s words left the restless young man speechless and challenged him to devour the sacred texts. Gamaliel was a scholar of Greek literature and a leader of the liberal school of thought among Jews. Although Hebrew scholars disdained Greek literature, Gamaliel had dared to compare the great works of the Greek world with Hebrew texts and had acquired a very attractive universal perspective. That’s how Saul obtained a panoramic vision of faith. He knew Hebrew poetry and could compare it with The Iliad and The Odyssey. To do so, he learned to master languages such as Hebrew, Greek, Latin and Aramaic, which was the common language. Even so, his Hebrew roots were deeply anchored. And so Saul was soon considered as one of the great wise men of Judaism and was accepted in the Israelites academic circle of that time. Nobody could deny the young man’s sincerity and deep spiritual convictions.
In His time, God would channel all that knowledge to make Saul one of the most powerful instruments in the New Testament.
Strive in school and find pleasure in learning, researching and reading. God will use your talents to powerfully proclaim His Word in this world.
