THE OTHER SIDE OF THE COIN 

“In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ’ Jesus for you”  (1 Thessalonians 5:18). 

UNGRATEFULNESS, or the opposite attitude to yesterday’s reflecting, which was “gratitude,” keeps us from appreciating the small details in daily life than give moments of well-being. If gratitude stems from the humility of acknowledging that we receive underserved gifts; ingratitude comes from pride and arrogance believing that nothing that happens to us is by grace.

The person who is ungrateful does not recognize that his existence is sustained in God, as well as in other people who do something for him every day. In addition, she believes that what she has belongs to her in its entirety and she is not interested in having received it, because she feels worthy of it.

Gratitude, like love, has to be reciprocated and nurtured. Those who do not give thanks will finally be left alone, with their meager efforts to show themselves and others that they do not need anyone.

Ingratitude can lead us to despise God’s blessings and even betray the principles of the gospel. It was this ungrateful attitude that made Judas a traitor (see Luke 22: 1-6) and that tricked the prodigal son into demanding his inheritance, unaware that he had enjoyed it since he was born. How sad it is to live life with the petty attitude of ingratitude!

Indeed, ingratitude is a sin. The Israelites longed for the pots of Egypt, because they were not able to appreciate the miracle of liberation that God had worked on their behalf through Moses. They did not thank the water from the rock or the bread from heaven, and for this reason they came to murmur against God and against Moses. Another very different thing would have happened if they had felt true gratitude towards the Lord and towards his servant.

Let’s not belittle God’s goodness by forgetting to thank him for his blessings. None of the good things we have is our doing. Behind all success is the invisible hand of God moving in our favor. A grateful heart praises and glorifies in all circumstances. Thank God for you, even if you are not perfect; for your family, even if it has flaws; for your church, even with its human limitations; and, above all, because Christ came into your life.
