“As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God» (l Peter 4: 1 0).
Two great lessons can be gleaned from today’s verse. The first lessons is the fact that the gifts we’ve received from God are wonderful and, as receivers of these gifts, we must feel pleased with what God has given us and should give Him glory for these gifts. The second lessons is the fact that the objective of these gifs is to minister to others, therefore we should not use them for selfish purposes. Two law students graduated from Chicago-Kent College of Law. The first was a blind young man named Overton. As he was being recognized for his academic achievements during the graduation ceremony, he took the opportunity to mention that a great part of his success was due to his colleague, Mr. Kaspryzak, who was a double-arm amputee.
They met at the university and could often be seen walking together, shoulder to shoulder. Overton would carry the books and Kaspryzak would guide his colleague. In the library, Kaspryzak would read and Overton listened and turned the page every time the reader told him to; other times, Overton dictated while Kaspryzak wrote. They had different gifts and different limitations, but together they formed a perfect team. The story of these two lawyers emphasizes the fact that as good stewards, using our gifts to serve others has mutual effects. The blessings are multiplied with the abundance of gifts, for the Bible does not list just a few and the list is not complete.
As today’s verse reads, God’s grace is manifold. In 1 Corinthians 12, we can find the gifts of speech, knowledge, faith, healing, prophecy, discerning between false spirits and the Spirit of God, as well as the gift of speaking and understanding languages. In Romans 12, we are told about the gifs of ministry, teaching, exhortation, generosity, diligence, management, care and support for others. In Ephesians 4, we read about the ecclesiastical gifs: apostles, prophets, evangelists, and teachers.
We all have certain gifts and lack others because the Spirit distributes «to each one individually as He wills» (l Cor. 12:11). You may not have the gifs you are longing for, but you definitely possess some. Know them well, nurture them and, above all, follow the apostle Paul’s recommendation to use them to serve others. Thus, you will greatly benefit not only from using them in serving others but also from the manifold blessings you will receive through the gifs of others.
