THE LOGIC OF LOVE

THE LESS WE HAVE, the more we give. Seems absurd, but it’s the logic of love.» With these apparently illogical words, Mother Teresa of Calcutta explained the wonderful way love works. She experienced it in her own life, since she gave up all her material goods to devote herself completely to a cause, and her spiritual riches have enriched all of us. When people really love God, they can get rid of everything and realize that the result is greater blessings for their lives.

The Scriptures give us the case of another woman who also gave up everything and is a source of inspiration even today: the widow of Zarephath. Being a widow in the times when she had to experience it meant ending up in the most abject poverty. And that was, indeed, her case: «In this poverty-stricken home the famine pressed sore, and the pitifully meager fare seemed about to fail. The coming of Elijah on the very day when the widow feared that she must give up the struggle to sustain life tested to the utmost her faith in the power of the living God» (White, Prophets and Kings, Ch. 10, p. 130). After learning what her economic situation was, Elijah, an unknown foreigner, asked her to give him them eager food she had left. He simply added: «For thus says the Lord God of Israel: ‘The bin of flour shall not be used up, nor shall the jar of oil run dry, until he day the Lord sends rain on the earth»‘ (1 Kings 17:14). Can you imagine what would have happened to you? What would you have done?

[The widow] went away and did according to the word of Elijah; and she and he and her household ate for many days» (verse 15). The Lord fulfilled His promise, but not without first testing the faithfulness of His daughter. Can you imagine the gratitude of this woman who went from death to life by serving her fellow man? Truly, God adds by subtracting and multiplies by dividing: the widow subtracted and divided her meager food and the Lord added and multiplied blessings on her. God wants to do the same thing in your life. Surrender yourself to Him without reserve.

«For thus says the Lord God of Israel: ‘The bin of flour shall not be used up, nor shall the jar of oil run dry, until the day the Lord sends rain on the earth’ » (1 Kings 17:14).
