«That word you know, which was proclaimed throughout all Judea, and began from Galilee after the baptism which John preached: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him» (Acts 10:37, 38).
IF YOU HAD TO SUMMARIZE IN ABOUT FIFTY WORDS the work that Jesus performed among us, as He walked the dusty streets of Palestine, what would you say?
The words of the apostle Peter, in today’s text, provide us with this summary. What did the apostle say, on that occasion, to those gathered at the house of Cornelius, the Roman centurion? Basically, three things. One, that Jesus was anointed by the power of the Holy Spirit. Two, that He used that power, not for His own benefit, but to do good to those in need. And three, all those blessings were possible because God was with Him.
Now, if the Lord of glory «went about doing good»; if His life was a permanent source of blessing for anyone who came into contact with Him, shouldn’t the same be said about us, His followers? Can we imagine all the good that would result if we allowed the Holy Spirit to dwell in our hearts?
What if, like Jesus, God’s presence accompanied us everywhere?
This point is illustrated very well by a story told by Phillip Keller. He writes that one day at home he received a visit from two friends heading to the East to attend a marriage engagement. After sharing unforgettable evenings, these friends asked Phillip to accompany them, and he gladly agreed. They had been traveling for several days when one of them realized they had misplaced their hat. He then asked Phillip to contact his wife to search the house for the missing hat. His wife’s response, Phillip says, was one he could never forget.
«I’ve searched everywhere,» she said, «and I haven’t seen any sign of that hat. The only thing those two men left behind in this house when they left was a great blessing”.
It is difficult to read this story and not ask: What do I «leave behind» after I have visited a home? After I leave my workplace? And on an even larger scale, What legacy will I leave behind after I have passed through this world?
Dear heavenly Father, today I want to live to do good;
and I want to take You with me wherever I go.
Only then can my life be a blessing, not only today,
but until the end of my days in this world. To You be honor and glory!
