ON THE LIST Of the wealthiest men in the world, Bernard Amault, Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, Carlos Slim or Amancio Ortega stand among others.
They have such huge fonunes that their whole lives wouldn’t be long enough to count a bill at a time, not to mention a coin at a time. It sounds appealing, right? Maybe we imagine those men don’t need anything, and it’s true, if we only think about it from a material standpoint. To most people, the idea of being wealthy is centered on money and the things they possess. But wealth can be considered from many different viewpoints aside from financial resources.
Marilyn Monroe, in her days, one of the most famous and beautiful actresses in the world, who possessed a great fortune allowing her to have tremendous luxuries and pleasures, ended up her life by taking an overdose of barbiturates to escape depression. Her financial Wealth didn’t help her enjoy life; she could have been wealthier, humanly speaking, if she had had something as priceless as being emotionally balanced, and of course if she had had faith.
The question is: What is life’s true wealth, the one that provides satisfaction and happiness? In the Bible, among other answers, we read, “The slothful man does not roast what he took in hunting, but diligence is man’s precious possession» (Proverbs 12:27). A human beings true possession is diligence: doing things right, with care, faithfulness to God, conscientiousness and solicitousness. Satisfaction, peace, motivation and sometimes also material possessions are obtained from this kind of wealth.
The task the Lord assigns us should be done to the best of our abilities. Let’s not settle for anything less than good. The assurance of having done something right pays off with unthinkable profits, including material ones. Mary and Elizabeth worked at a textile factory. Their work was detailed, and had to be done carefully and precisely.
They had to overcome the physical and psychological exhaustion of doing the same thing for over eight hours each day. In time, one of them was promoted as supervisor and later on became a business partner. Her diligence went a long way.
Today’s tasks will no doubt require precision and sacrifice; perhaps your work at home, or outside the home, or your homework may seem tedious to you, but the result of having done things right will give you fulfillment.
