THE JOY OF CONTENTMENT

Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”  HEBREW 13:5, ESV

In yesterday’s devotional, I shared with you about our low-budget trip to Mexico awhile back. After visiting Chichén  Itzá that day, we went back to the entrance of ruins to catch our bus back to Cancun. Soon we found out that we had missed the last bus going back. Since we spoke Spanish, I was able to find out that there were more buses that went to Cancun, but they left from city called Valladolid, about forty-five minutes away. You’re probably thinking, Now what? We walked out to the street, and I stuck my thump out. Although hitchhiking is not very popular in North America, it’s quite a common form of getting around in many other countries, especially if you’re traveling on a tight budget! After a few minutes, my wife and I were pickup by a man in a pickup truck. He said he was heading to Valladolid, but he only had room for us to ride in the bed of the pickup truck. We were not in any kind of position to be picky, so we jumped in. It was only a forty five minutes ride; what could go wrong? Ten minutes into our ride it started raining.

My wife thought I was crazy, but eventually we made it to the bus station in Valladolid, and from there we were able to take a bus back to Cancun that evening. In the end, since we had hitchhiked part of the way back, the return trip cost even less than the cost to get there! I know what you’re thinking Boy, he’s cheap! I’ve learned that in order to travel a lot, you have to be willing to adapt to situations and be content.

Learning to be content will build your character and help you deal with challenges in life. It will also bring joy and peace from constantly wanting things you don’t have. Be joyful simply that God is with you and He will never leave you!
