THE INCREDIBLE VICTORIA FALLS

And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding from the throne of God and the Lamb. In the middle of its street, and on either side of the river, was the tree of life, which bore twelve fruits, each tree yielding its fruit every month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.  REVELATION 22:1 NKJV

As my wife and I drove through the southern part of the African continent, there was one place I really wanted to Visit-Victoria Falls. After driving through the Kalahari Desert, my excitement mounted as signs confirmed that we were approaching Victoria Falls. Before arriving at the falls we had to pull over and see the tree with the largest trunk in the world-it was about seventy-five feet around the base! Just off the background we glimpsed the Zambezi River, which widens to more than a mile before plunging over the falls. The sound of the falls grew much louder as we got closer. Cleary, something huge was up ahead.

When we got there it was breathtaking. At this point, the entire river falls into a gorge, creating a mile-wide sheet of falling water more than 350 feet tall. It was impressive. On the opposite side of the gorge was a long hiking trail that allows you to hike across the full length of the waterfalls. At the midpoint, you can look in each direction and not see the end of the falls, all you see is waterfalls as far as the eye can see. As you can imagine, the sound of a mile of falling water is quite loud.

The interesting thing is that the area immediately around the falls is lush rain forest because of the never-ending mist in the air. But once you drive a mile or two away from the falls, you are back in the dry desert again. This incredibly lush place reminded me of the river of life and the tree of life mentioned in our verse today in Revelation. Heaven is special place, and I’m excited to be a child of God because I want to be in that number someday. Don’t you?
