THE GREATNESS OF MOSES

«The Lord spoke to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend» (Exodus 33: 1 1).

WHAT WAS THERE IN MOSES’S LIFE that allowed this man of God to earn a special place among the great leaders in human history? And how was he able to put up with such a stubborn and rebellious people for forty years in the wilderness?

The author of Hebrews gives us the answer when he says, «It was by faith that Moses left the land of Egypt, not fearing the kings anger. He kept right on going because he kept his eyes on the one who is invisible» (Hebrews 11:27, NLT, emphasis added). In other words, his greatness was the result of his communion with God. A communion that was so intimate, as today’s text indicates, that the Lord spoke to Moses without intermediaries.

Why did Moses have such a great honor? Because for him, God’s presence was akin to the oxygen he breathed. That’s what Ellen G. White stated when she wrote that Moses was «not only looking down through the ages for Christ to be made manifest in the flesh, but he saw Christ in a special manner accompanying the children of Israel in all their travels. God was real to him, ever present in his thoughts. «—Testimonies for the Church, vol. 5, ch. 80, p. 651.

We can find an illustrative example of this reality after the apostasy that took place in Horeb, when the people worshipped the golden calf. The Lord then said to Moses, «Go up to a land flowing with milk and honey; for I will not go up in your midst, lest I consume you on the way, for you are a stiff-necked people» (Exodus 33:3). Instead of His presence, God would send an angel to accompany the people. What was Moses’s response to the Lord? «If Your Presence does not go with us, do not bring us up from here» (Exodus 33:15).

As Bruce Wilkinson and Larry Libby said, as attractive as the land which flowed with «milk and honey» was, Moses’s greatest interest was not the land of God, but the God of the land. And it was not that Moses did not appreciate the companionship of the angels; what he wanted was the presence of his Lord.

Is God’s presence a living reality in your life, in my life? Like Moses, can you say, «Lord, if You don’t personally go with me, don’t make me leave this place»?

Holy Spirit, please dwell in me today in such a full way that like Moses, I can believe that Christ walks beside me at all times.
