THE GREAT CENTER OF ATTRACTION

«And so it was with me, brothers and sisters. When I came to you,

I did not come with eloquence or human wisdom as I proclaimed to you

the testimony about God. For I resolved to know nothing

while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified»

(1 Corinthians 2: 1. 2, MIV).

THINK FOR A MOMENT of the great preachers the Christian world has known. What distinctive element in their messages made them so great? H. M. S. Richards, one of those “great preachers,” replies, “The men who have distinguished themselves by attracting great masses of people in large cities to listen to their preaching, have always been men who have preached the gospel.”’

As an example to illustrate his point of view, Elder Richards quotes Charles H.

Spurgeon, the man thousands of people heard preach week after week at the Great Tabernacle in London for over thirty years. What element in particular made a small congregation, who could barely gather two hundred people, in time gather thousands for every service, even on Thursday nights?

When someone asked Spurgeon what he had done for so many people to listen to his sermons, his answer could not have been more eloquent: “The only thing 1 do,» he said, “is preach the gospel. It is my church members who bring other church members. They go out and tell people, ‘Come and listen to someone who preaches the gospel.’

What does the gospel have that so strongly attracts men and women of all ages, races and social classes? It is Christ. Not a reformer or revolutionary Christ that some people want to present; not even the master or moralist: it is the crucified Christ, “the power of God and the wisdom of God” (l Corinthians 1:24); the Christ who left heaven, lived among us and died on the cross to provide “salvation for everyone who believes” (Romans 1:16).

Is the church you attend languishing? Then let Christ be preached to that congregation! Is your spiritual life “drying?” Perhaps it is because Christ is not the center of your life!

The Lord Jesus s And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all peoples to Myself’ (John 12:32). Let us lift up the cross of Calvary on high, and as a result Christ will become the center of attention. The glory of His name will be our greatest glory; and the attributes of His immaculate character will be the reason for our worship.

Thank You, Christ Jesus, for dying in my place on the cross of Calvary.

Today and always. I want to lift high the cross. so that only You

will be the great center of attention.
