WHY BIRDS DON’T SING ANYMORE

“For we know the whole creation groans and labors

with birth pangs together until now

(Romans 8:22)»

CLOSE TO TWENTY YEARS AGO, we moved to our current house, one of the most sublime experiences I enjoyed when we came, was the hundreds of birds Singing every morning and evening; in fact, hearing one of their songs when it hadn’t even dawned yet was my favorite part. The bird would start off with a short, subtle song, barely perceptible to those who were awake at this time. As day dawned, its song would increase little by little; when the sun came up over the horizon with all its splendor, the tone of its song would go up, its volume would increase and its feathers would float in its chest as if greeting God and nature.

Years have passed and its songs died out; the lonely trees seem to grieve their absence, especially on rainy summer afternoons.

I still miss them!

This is our planet’s sad condition. Birds no longer sing, fish die in the oceans without anyone saving them, plants are buried in cracks of dry ground and human beings seem indifferent to such a cruel reality. Ecologists and naturalists make alarming statements. Planet Earth agonizes and it only has a few years left as we know it.

What have we done with God’s joy when He saw in His creation that everything was indeed good?

We know that everything will ultimately end, because God’s immeasurable love for His children moves Him to act on our behalf.

Dear sister, I’m not telling you to go out on the streets with an environmental poster; what I want to do is invite you to reflect on what we’re doing with our responsibility to care for this planet. The Earth “groans and labors with birth pangs;” nevertheless, there are still glimpses of God’s beautiful creation: plants have beautiful flowers and trees provide delicious fruit, animals care for their young with love, and though the poles weep as they melt bit by bit, we know that God is in control.

Let’s get our children in touch with God’s creation and teach them how to care for it. Jesus will soon come and make all things new, but while we are here, let’s take care of our great home: planet Earth. Will you accept the challenge?
