THE GIFT OF SACRIFICE

“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one that this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you.”

JOHN 15:12-14 ESV

Life is very fragile. When God originally created us, we were made perfect. But because of sin, death was introduced in to the world and has been a part of humanity ever since the time Adam and Eve. Death is something we eventually have to deal with.

A few years ago, our family traveled to Panama City, Florida for a little escape from the northern winter weather. We rented a condo with several bedrooms and drove down to spend a few days in the warm weather. For the first day or two, everyone had a great time relaxing and playing on the beach. The waves weren’t too big, and the weather was nice. On the third day there was a red flag on the beach that day, which meant the currents were strong, and you swam at your own risk. Our children were ten and twelve, and they were not allowed to get in the water more than knee deep that day. A bit father in, a teenager was playing in the water and he was suddenly trapped by the current. In a flash, his father rushed out to save his son who was struggling less then seventy-five feet away.

The father reached his son and saved him, but in a horrible turn of events the father was caught by current and drowned. As you can imagine, this affected the reminder of our time there, and it really made us think about how delicate life is. It also made me think of how the father never hesitated to sacrifice himself to save him.

We are all sons and daughters of God, and Jesus also came and sacrificed his life so that we could be saved. Sin is horrible thing, but salvation from sin is the best news we could ever get.

Jesus’ sacrifice will give us eternal salvation. In the meaning I suggest we treat every day of life as a precious gift.
