THE GHOST TOWN

When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.  JAMES 4:3, NIV

During our trip to Death Valley in California, we learned that there was also a nearby ghost town in Nevada called Rhyolite. In the early 1900s, the economy in the town was completely abandoned. At its peak in the 1907, there were almost five thousand people living in this town, and many buildings lined the streets. The town has sprung up to serve and support the mines and the gold rush, but it didn’t last. By 1920 it was pretty much empty.

When we arrived, no one else was in the town. Only a handful of the ruined buildings were left. In some buildings, all that was left were a few of the exterior walls such as the bank, which was originally built with stone blocks. Other buildings were more complete, such as the train station, but I was amazed to think that a little more than one hundred years ago. Almost five thousand people lived there, and now there was not a single soul. Up the street about a mile way were a mine and mill that employed many people from town. Over the years, movie companies have used the town for some of their backgrounds, but today this town serves no purpose except as a look back through history. The buildings were there,  and piped water and electricity had even been brought to the town, but the most important thing was missing-people.

Sometimes we put way too much value in material things, and we pray to GOD asking for material things we think will bring us happiness, but true joy can be found when we serve and pray for others. GOD warns us in the BIBLE that we sometimes ask for things but don’t receive them because we have selfish motives in our hearts.

Ask GOD today to help us not be selfish in how we pray.

Make your request the kind of requests that honor GOD, not you.
