THE FRUITS OF HARD WORK

WORK

«He who tills his land will have plenty of  bread, but he who follows frivolity will have poverty enough!»  (Proverbs 28:19).

During the 1920s Antonio Caso, the Mexican archeologist, was very interested in Mount Alban, a mountain in Oaxaca Valley (Mexico). A while back, remains of the Zapotec culture, which ruled the region between IV B.C. and VIII A.C., had been found there. However, he hadn’t studied it in depth. Caso first visited the place in 1928 and excitedly returned home determined to obtain funds to excavate the enclave. He knocked on many doors seeking help but didn’t always obtain the results he expected. He even asked the governor of Oaxaca to build a road that would make the archeological site easier to access.

Finally, in 1931, Caso returned to Mount Alban with funds of his own and from several institutions to begin excavating. It was a tremendous challenge. At first, his goal was to study the symbols on Zapotec steles, but the archeologist was attracted by various mounds which to him seemed like tombs. And he wasn’t mistaken. He soon discovered that most of them had been raided. But that didn’t discourage him and he went on excavating with his hard-working team. Then on January 6, 1932, Juan Valenzuela, one of the archeologists, found tomb number seven and went to Antonio Caso with a jade necklace and a smile on his face. They couldn’t believe it! After a week of hard work, on January 13, 1932, Caso announced his findings in a brief telegram, «Most important tomb in America discovered, sending details. Alfonso Caso, Archeologist.» Later on, National Geographic magazine published a long article about tomb seven in Mount Alban, where Caso stated, «When we left the tomb, I realized the immeasurable value of my discovery not only from a material standpoint but also from an artistic and scientific standpoint. Such an important treasure had never before been discovered in America.»

Thanks to Antonio Caso and his team’s brilliant work, many secrets of the ancient Zapotec culture came to light, allowing us a glimpse of the extraordinary past of what is now Oaxaca (Mexico).

Hard work pays off. Those who don’t give in to laziness and are willing to work hard are building a character for the Kingdom of Heaven.

Pray today that the Lord will help you be a hard-working person in everything you do.
