And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men» (Luke 2:52)
Everything that has been revealed from the childhood and youth of Jesus can be found in a few words in Matthew 2 and in Luke 2. We know about the conditions of His birth in Bethlehem, His circumcision on the eighth day, His presentation at the temple, the family’s escape to Egypt, their return to Nazareth and Jesus going missing at the temple of Jerusalem when he was twelve years old. This is where we find today’s verse (that is repeated in Luke 2:40). The texts mention the beginning of the complete and for balanced optimal growth development. of Jesus, We something are told about that modern the increase pedagogy of his keeps emphasizing height and strength, wisdom and mercy, thus setting the focus on the physical, mental and spiritual aspects.
Francis and Elsa had two children for whom they had very high expectations. Since their early school years, they focused on school assignments, making them do their homework for two hours daily, a rate that increased year after year. They only accepted excellent grades and the children’s schooling was the center of their family life. ‘Then they noticed any academic decline, they hired private teachers and kept strict hours of study. These two children lacked physical activity, games, sport, and relationships with children their own age. They did not receive any religious education because their parent believed that this element would not help them reach their highest academic and professional goals. However, when they came of legal age, the brothers decided to leave the family home and live independently. While their parents’ educational system lead them to professional achievements, the other aspects Of their complete development (social, physic and spiritual) were left unattended, and they had to deal with relationship problems and existential crises that could have probably been avoided through a more balanced education.
If you have children, nephews or other depending minors, make sure to encourage their integral development, similar to that of Jesus. Offer them intellectual and cultural experiences such as reading, school learning support, visits to museums, libraries, cultural centers, among others. Take care of their physical growth through outdoors activities, sports, healthy diet, hygiene, and personal care. Finally, keep on meeting their spiritual needs, through prayer, reading the Bible, being active in church, having faith in God, and putting into practice the religious principles that encourage helping and empathizing with others.
