On April 19, 1995, McArthur Wheeler robbed two banks in Pittsburgh, United States.
McArthur, a man who was 5 foot 7 inches and weighed over 260 pounds, conducted an armed robbery of two banks, in broad daylight and without using a mask to hide his identity. Surveillance cameras filmed him aiming his gun at cashiers. Police shared the images with the local news station and, within minutes, received enough information to imprison McArthur. When the police knocked on his door, McArthur could not believe he had been found. «But I put lemon juice on!» he told police agents. McArthur had read somewhere that lemon juice is used as invisible ink; he thought that if he painted his face with lemon juice, he would become invisible to security cameras. Before robbing the banks, he verified his theory by painting his face with lemon juice and taking a picture with his Polaroid camera. Coincidentally, the picture turned out dark and McArthur believed he had found a sure way to rob banks without being recognized. He was taken to prison, but his story inspired David Dunning, a Psychology professor at Cornell University, to look into what had happened. David conducted a series of experiments along with Justin Kruger. They both discovered that people who know the least—precisely those who are most incompetent—tend to consider they are smarter and better prepared. That unrealistic feeling of superiority is precisely what prevents them from recognizing their own incompetence.
I am convinced we all have lemon-painted faces in some area of our lives, but especially when dealing with understanding God’s ways. God’s perspective is infinitely greater and higher than ours. God sees the past, the present and the future in one sweep. His intelligence and power are unlimited. Sometimes we are tempted to suspect God does not know what He is doing or does not love us. On those days, let us think about the story of McArthur Wheeler and, with humility, ask God to wash our faces.
Lord, Your ways are infinitely higher than mine. Whenever I am tempted to think I know more and let go of Your hand, please remind me that my face is painted with lemon. Wash me of my pride, Lord. Give me a humble heart that acknowledges Your wisdom. Amen.
