“THE DAYS OF YOUR MOURNING SHALL BE ENDED”

«Your sun shall no longer go down, nor shall your moon withdraw itself:

for the Lord will be your everlasting light, and the days of your mourning

shall be ended» (Isaiah 60:20).

THAT MORNING, which I will never forget, I entered my dying mother’s room and shuddered as I heard her breathing, clinging to a life that had inevitably come to an end. Alone with her, and with my heart broken into a thousand pieces.

I told her, “Mom, don’t worry. We’ll be alright. You have done your work. Go in peace.” Minutes later, her heart stopped beating, her breathing weakened and came to a halt, and she passed away. I was now in deep mourning.

That day we all suffered a great loss: my dad lost his beloved wife, my siblings lost the best mother in the world; others lost their noble grandmother, their sister. their friend …and I lost all that and so much more. I lost the one who bore in prayer the weight of my mistakes and responsibilities.

Everything I had become until then was because of my mother’s prayers. There were times in which I didn’t even pray for myself; but I was always sure my mother had never stopped praying for me. And she would repeat it to me every time we spoke: «My son, I don’t tire of praying for you; I carry you around in my heart, and I always ask God to deliver you from all evil.»

Five years have gone by, but my mother’s death still fills my life with grief. The pain caused by her departure is still there. alive, intense, insurmountable. I cry every time I recall her voice, when I think about her, when she calls to me in my dreams . . . Our farewell repeats itself over and over in my memory like an unforgettable movie; nevertheless, my tears are usually accompanied by a pleasant feeling of peace, an unwavering hope that we will meet again when the Lord blows the trumpet. What sustains me in my everyday life is knowing that God will soon fulfill this great promise: “Your sun shall no longer go down, nor shall your moon withdraw itself; for the Lord will be your everlasting light, and the days of your mourning shall be ended” (Isaiah 60:20).

Indeed, the day in which my mourning will end and these words will be heard is close at hand: °Awake and sing, you who dwell in dust; for your dew is like the dew of herbs, and the earth shall cast out the dead” (Isaiah 26:19).

The same thing will happen with your mourning: its days are numbered.
