THE CORNELIUS’S ARE OUT THERE

“And when he observed him, he was afraid, and said, “What is it, lord? So he said to him, ‘You prayers and yours alms have come to for a memorial before God’” (Acts 10:4)

Cornelius was an official in the Roman army, a Gentile, raised among idolatrous polytheists. But when he was exposed to the concepts of Judaism, he became devotedly monotheistic. He belonged to a group referred to as Those Who Fear God, Gentiles who loved the God of Israel, sympathizers of the Jewish faith that had not actually converted to Judaism. Cornelius had adopted some of the Jewish customs, such as their 3P.M. prayer time. He was praying when he had a vision of a heavenly visitor. As illustrated by the story, when you dedicate time to prayer and devotions, you are on the right path, where angels walk. God called Cornelius by his name, as He also knows your name, your prayer habits, the kindnesses you show to others, your offerings. there is nothing that escapes God’s eye. ‘the Lord knows every one of us by name, and just where we live, and the spirit we possess, and every act of our life. The ministering angels are passing through the churches, noting our faithfulness in our individual line of duty.»—Selected Messages, vol. 2, p. 217.

Cornelius responded with reverent fear, indicating that he had a vibrant relationship with God. How many “Cornelius’s” are there out there, obeying the truths they have discovered and waiting for someone to show them the way? ‘All in the world are not lawless and sinful. God has many thousands who have not bowed the knee to Baal. There are God-fearing men in the fallen churches.”—Evangelism, ch. 17, p. 558).

Light received, light obeyed. Each of us will be judged by the light we have received, and the greater the light, the greater our responsibility. ‘To- day God is seeking for souls among the high as well as the lowly. There are many like Cornelius, men whom the Lord desires to connect with His work in the world. Their sympathies are with the Lord’s people, but the ties that bind them to the world hold them firmly. It requires moral courage for them to take their position for Christ. Special efforts should be made for these souls, who are in so great danger, because of their responsibilities and associations.”—The Acts of the Apostles, ch. 14, p. 139.

When you are willing to do God’s will, He shows you the way, He opens up opportunities, and He gives you greater light.
