If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up. ECCLESIASTES 4:10, NIV
While I studied architecture at Andrews University in Michigan, each Christmas and summer I had to figure out how to get home to California where my parents lived. Most times I flew home. Four times I drove the thirty two hours home. It was cheaper than flying, but it was a rough way to travel since I had to sleep a couple of days on the bus. Sometimes I had to get up in the middle of the night to let the person sitting next to me on or off the bus.
One year I had an opportunity to go home by train. I had a friend at Andrews who lived in Fresno, which was only an hour or so from my parents’ house. When I ask him how he was going to get home that summer, he told me he was going to take the train. That sounded interesting, so we decided to take the trip west together. His parents had already bought him a first-class ticket, which meant he would have an entire compartment to himself, so we decided to share it. From Michigan we took a train to Chicago, where we boarded a train that would take us all the way to Los Angeles. Our compartment was plenty of space. There was a huge window that allowed us to look outside, plus a table that would fold away and beds that would fold out at night. Even though it took us two days to get home, it was by far the most memorable journey home ever.
The journey of life is rich because of the friendships we make along the way. When you have a hard day, a friend is there to help up make it through. In return, when your friend falls you can help them up. Don’t take those friendships for granted. They are a blessing from God!
