«Looking up to heaven, He blessed and broke and gave the loaves to the disciples; and the disciples gave to the multitudes» (Matthew 14: 19).
IF YOU READ OUR REFLECTION YESTERDAY, you will remember the lesson we learned from the miracle of multiplying the bread and the fish: that in the hands of God, the little we have is always a lot. In Jesu’s hands, a boy’s lunch was enough to feed an entire crowd!
There is a second lesson derived from the miracle that the multitude witnessed that day in Bethsaida. Notice the sequence: «Then He commanded the multitudes to sit down on the grass. And He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, He blessed and broke and gave the loaves to the disciples; and the disciples gave to the multitudes» (Matthew 14:19).
From whom did the multitude receive bread: from Jesus or from the disciples? From the disciples! The chain began with Jesus, but the bread reached the people through the disciples. Thus:
«Looking up to heaven» (It all began with the Fathers blessing).
«He blessed and broke and gave the loaves to the disciples.»
And the disciples gave to the multitude.»
The Father blesses the bread > Jesus gives the bread to the disciples > The disciples give bread to the multitude.
Why did the Lord not give the bread directly to the multitude? Because in the divine plan to redeem humanity, the disciples had to be «the channel of communication between Christ and the people. «—The Desire of Ages, ch. 39, p. 370.
Isn’t that great? We, you and I, are between a compassionate God and a world hungry for the Bread of Life! We cannot meet the needs of a world that is perishing by our own means, but there is one thing we can do: «We can impart only that which we receive from Christ; and we can receive only as we impart to others.”-Ibid.
Do you want to be a true disciple of the Lord? Then consecrate to Him the little or much you have (in talents, resources, and influence); and when He returns it to you multiplied, be sure to share with others the blessings you receive. Best of all, it is never too late to join the chain! See how: «If we go to the Source of all strength, with our hands of faith outstretched to receive, we shall be sustained in our work, even under the most forbidding circumstances, and shall be enabled to give to others the bread of life.”- The Desire of Ages, ch. 39, p. 371.
Heavenly Father, today I want to be part of the chain of blessings that begins with You. I want to receive from Christ, to give to the world, and thus glorify Your holy name.
