«And the covenant that I have made with you, you shall not forget, nor shall you fear other gods» (2 Kings 17:38).
The enemy envies the worship and praise that God receives, and he will do everything possible to put obstacles in the way. We were intentionally created with the need to worship and with an emptiness that only God can fill, called «existential vacuum.» People have tried to fill it with fashions, music, power, money, knowledge, pleasure, drugs, sex—the list is long. Since they find it difficult to worship someone who they cannot see, they adore what they see, creation and not the Creator. They lose their sense of who God is, and they replace Him with idols that they think will fill their existential vacuum.
We were born with a natural inclination to worship, but if we do not educate our mind to worship the infinite God, we will end up worshiping visible representations. Idolatry limits or falsifies the concept of God and in the end the idolater becomes a slave of their idol, because it requires their time, drains their finances, and exhausts their energy.
What can we do to free ourselves of the slavery of idolatry? Cry to God and ask Him to renew our conscience and to sit on the throne of our life. Study the word of God to understand who God is and how He wants to be worshiped.
«Thousands have a false conception of God and His attributes. They are as verily serving a false god as were the servants of Baal. Are we worshiping the true God as He is revealed in His word, in Christ, in nature, or are we adoring some philosophical idol enshrined in His place? God is a God of truth. Justice and mercy are the attributes of His throne. He is a God of love, of pity and tender compassion. Thus He is represented in His Son, our Saviour. He is a God of patience and long-suffering. If such is the being whom we adore and to whose character we are seeking to assimilate, we are worshiping the true God.» —Testimonies for the Church, vol. 5, p. 173.
Ask God to reveal His holy, eternal, omnipotent nature, and for His presence in your life to be real. He is waiting for your invitation to reveal the plan He has for you. «Thus says the Lord, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: ‘I am the Lord your God, who teaches you to profit, who leads you by the way you should go'» (Isaiah 48:17).
