«l am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst» (John 6:35).
JONI EARECKSON TADA’S SPIRIT was downcast, sunken in sadness, depression, and even hatred. She felt like committing suicide and doubted God’s existence, just as she admitted in her autobiography. girl who had always been so active; who loved to ride horses, hike, play tennis, and swim was suddenly disabled, unable to move her arms or legs. Everything had happened so suddenly that it was difficult to believe. She dove headfirst into the water thinking it was much deeper than it really was, and suddenly, her cervical vertebrae were shattered. She was left a quadriplegic from her shoulders down and now she had to begin a new life.
therapy she underwent for two years was hard, but it taught her many things that would be fundamental in her life: to mouth paint (she would later sell her paintings), to fight against depression, to write books, to sing, and above all, to cling strongly to Christ. Her example as a determined and victorious Christian woman is a great inspiration for all of us. She said, «Now I believe that God’s purpose for my accident was to transform a stubborn young woman into a woman who reflects with patience, perseverance, and hope about heavenly glories.»
Joni wrote on one occasion,» When a wave of emotions threatens to swallow me up, I cling to an objective anchor from the Word of God.» is what I propose to you this morning: seek an anchor from the Bible that you can cling to when emotions, circumstances, and life itself threaten to devour you completely; when dejection, sadness, depression, hatred, or suicidal thoughts make an appearance. following is an example of an anchor: «I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst» (John 6:35).
That is what Jesus Christ, the Bread of Life, produces in us if we allow Him to do it every day. Let us anchor ourselves to Him and the truths of His Word as we travel in the path of growth, learning, and faith that He places before us.
