Our world is a very diverse place. Whenever I traveled, I must keep a very open mind because there may be things that are very special and sacred to some that may not be to me. It’s also a great opportunity to learn about other cultures in order to understand how different people around the world think and view life. During a trip to Asia, my wife and I spent a few days in honk Kong. There were several things on our list to see and do, but one of the things I didn’t want to miss was a visit to the “Big Buddha,” one of the largest Buddha statues in the world. The challenging part was the location. This statue was in a very hard-to-reach place because it was built next to a very secluded monastery.
First, from Hong Kong we took a ferry to a small island. Next, we found a local bus that would take us up a winding road up the mountain. The bus finally arrived at the top and dropped us off at the bottom of an enormous staircase. We started climbing, and 268 steps later we made it to the top. There were a lot of people there who had made long pilgrimages to see this statue of bronze and to honor this person they consider to be holy. At the top we were treated with amazing close-up view of this enormous 112-foot-tall statue and also an incredible view of the island and the surrounding ocean.
During our whole time there, we did our best to show respect to the people and the place, since we knew it was a special place of worship to them, even though Buddha was just a man. I worship a God who is the Creator of the universe and all the things in it. God is the master of all and worthy of our worship every day. We are still to treat others with respect and love, but when it’s time to worship, I’m thrilled to be a child of the living God of the universe!
