After a fifty-two-hour train ride from Switzerland to Greece, my three friends and I were happy to arrive in Athens, the capital of Greece. Since my friends and I basically starved during our fifty-two-hour train ride, we decided to get food first. We fund a restaurant just below the Acropolis where we could eat in the shadow of this amazing historical site. Seeing that it was the first time any of us had been to Greece, we concluded that we needed to eat food at a traditional Greek restaurant. While three of us ordered traditional Greek plates, one guy from our group decided to have pizza-we teased him about that!
Soon we were hiking our way up toward the entrance of the Acropolis-the most important historical monument in the city. We tried to take a short-cut from the restaurant since the normal tourist approach would have taken us way around a much longer route. This got us lost trying to get there, but in the process we were able to see authentic parts of the surrounding city that most tourists do not see. We found ourselves walking through people’s yards, alleyways, and through marketplaces, meeting interesting people. We finally made the climb up the steps till we were standing face to face with one of the most famous Greek building-the Parthenon, which was build more than four hundred years before the time of Christ!
Even though our shortcut was hard, we enjoyed the journey to the Acropolis so much more than if we had taken the path chosen by most tourists.
The Bible says the path to heaven is narrow. Like our path in Athens, it means the path to heaven is less traveled and more difficult, but in the end, it’s rewarding. Many people choose the easy path, which leads to destruction. There are no other paths to pick from. Which path will you choose?
