«Go to the ant, you sluggard! Consider her ways and he wise, which, having no captain, overseer or ruler, provides her supplies in the summer, and gathers her food in the harvest» (Proverbs 6:6-8).
WORK
Several times, I’ve been asked by some parents what their children need to succeed in life. Generally, before I can reply, they interrupt me by enumerating their offspring’s virtues: good grades in school, some foreign languages, above average intelligence, among other things. My answer has been similar almost every time; talent is not enough. I know many kids who, even with a professional degree, are truly a disappointment. Why? Because they haven’t learned the ant’s lesson men, toned in this morning’s verse.
Commitment to work. Ants don’t need to be given the same order repeatedly, they don’t need a boss to go after them to make sure they’re doing their job. Every. body knows what they have to do. That means learning to solve problems before being asked. Do you get that? Businesses today need people they can trust to solve their problems, and not people who, when they get to the office, will create more conflicts than there are. So, in addition to being talented, you have to learn to be responsible and efficient.
Foreseeing problems. That’s called vision. You have to learn to look beyond the present. What difficulties can be foreseen? How can I avoid them or, given the case, solve them as quickly as possible? How can their impact be reduced? Ants don’t wait for problems to occur and catch them unaware, instead they act ahead of time, Managing abundance. We can’t always enjoy times of abundance in life, but they do exist. And to enjoy them we have to know how to manage prosperity. Otherwise, we won’t even taste the fruit of our labor. There you have the ants, which don’t go hungry or have those kinds of setbacks. Why? Because their storehouses are full when hard times come by.
Don’t forget, talent is not enough. It’s not enough to be smart and boast professional degrees. You have to learn the ants’ secret in order to succeed in this life. They, like many creatures in nature, have a lot to teach us.
