«SWEETER THAN HONEY»

«They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold; they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the honeycomb. By them your servant is warned; in keeping them there is great reward» (Psalm 19:10-12, NIV).

THE YOUNGEST PERSON to have ever been awarded a Nobel Prize in Medicine is Frederick Banfing. He was thirty-two years old when he won the prestigious award for having discovered insulin. Insulin is a hormone that makes it possible for blood sugar to be distributed throughout body cells and be turned into energy. Through this discovery, Banting and his colleagues, allowed «millions of humans suffering from diabetes to exchange their death sentence for a normal life; they went from having to die from diabetes to being able to live with diabetes.»

Nevertheless, despite the medical advancements, diabetes continues to affect families around the world, particularly in wealthier countries. Over 3.5 million people die each year from the consequences of this disease. According to the American Diabetes Association, diabetes causes more deaths than breast cancer and AIDS combined.»

Although we should be grateful for the contribution of Banting and his team, if in reality we don’t want to die from diabetes but live despite its existence, we should lead a lifestyle that minimizes the risk factors that would cause us to develop the disease. We need to learn the bitter truth about sugar so as to avoid the havoc it can wreak on our bodies. Since we don’t want to die from diabetes, will need to learn to live with it!

Meanwhile, we can learn to enjoy something very sweet and pleasant. David says that the Lord’s commands «are more precious than gold, than much pure gold; they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the honeycomb. By them your servant is warned; in keeping them there is great reward» (Psalm 19:10-12, NIV). The truth is, Satan has led us to believe that respecting God’s commandments is a very heavy load to bear, he even leads us to believe that it is useless to obey them. By comparing the commandments to the sweetness of honey, the psalmist reveals something John would say many centuries later: «His commandments are not burdensome» (1 John 5:3).

These commandments will help us live longer and better in this life, counteracting the terrible disease of sin.
