«Though they stumble, they will never fall, for the Lord holds them by the hand» (Psalm 37:24, NLT).
Rebecca Sharaya is a music therapist. For years, however, her love for music was vailed by a problem: perfectionism. Her desire to play every music piece without making a single mistake filled her with anxiety. Although her parents told her she had given a great performance, she could remember every single mistake, every wrong note with sharp clarity.
It was precisely her work as a music therapist that helped her change, by seeing the terrible consequences of that tendency in her patients. Women who, like Rebecca, have a tendency toward perfectionism, tend to view God’s plan for their lives through that interpretative framework. We think we cannot play a single note wrong! In her article «Hearing the Beauty of Imperfection,» Rebecca writes, «l feel that I have to do it [all] perfectly because God, the divine artist, must have written my own life’s symphony to sound a certain way. Even though I don’t necessarily have the sheet music, I feel compelled to play my part perfectly, and this terrifies me a little.»
God has a plan for our lives, but He does not expect us not to make mistakes. The Bible offers a gorgeous image of what happens when we stumble. “The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives. Though they stumble they will never fall, for the Lord holds them by the hand.” (Psalm 37:23,24, NLT.) God is like a mom teaching her baby how to walk holding him by the hand. When the baby stumbles, his mom helps him up, smiles at him and encourages him to go on. What mother would let go of her child’s hand when he stumbles or abandon him, or talk to him harshly? If we being sinners, know how to treat our children sweetly, with how much more tenderness will our heavenly Father lead us!
There is a huge difference between rebelling against God’s will and stumbling as we walk. The Bible says, “the godly may trip seven times, but they will get up again” (Proverbs 24:16, NLT). Stumbling is part of the process, but it does not ruin God’s plan for our lives. God knows we will stumble as we walk, that is why He offered to lead us by the hand!
Dear Lord, thank You because You lead me by the hand,
because your plans are not fragile,
or Your creativity so limited that my stumbling will ruin them.
