The plans of the diligent lead to profit as sure haste leads to poverty. PROVERB 21:5, NIV
I’m pretty sure everyone knows what a canyon is, but have you ever heard of a slot canyon? A slot canyon can be hundreds of feet deep but sometimes only a couple of feet wide. A few years ago while filming a video, we traveled to southern Utah to film a few scenes in a slot canyon, There were many slot canyons in the area, but we decided to search for one that would be far off the beaten path in order to film our scenes with minimal interruptions. After doing some research, we decided on a slot canyon that sounded exactly like what we wanted.
The camera crew and I were traveling in a four-wheel-drive jeep, so we weren’t worried. We found the off-road trailhead and headed in. We had to drive about five miles off road, and as we drove farther into the desert, the ground became very sandy, like on a beach or dune. That’s when the jeep got stuck. Even with the four-by-four traction, the wheels dug deeper and deeper into the sand. Fortunately, we knew what we had to do, even though it sounded like a strange solution. We got out of the jeep and let most of the air out of the four tires. It felt like we were sabotaging our own Jeep, but we knew of that this was the solution when driving in very loose sand. After lowering the pressure of our tires to a mere 15 psi, we got back into the jeep, and a moment later we were on our way. Soon we arrived at the slot canyon and spent the afternoon filming.
This little adventure would not have been possible if we hadn’t planned ahead and anticipated our problem with the sand so that we would know what to do. There was no phone signal where we were, so we wouldn’t have been able to Google the solution.
Planning ahead is an important principle God wants us to have in life as it will help us be successful. But don’t just plan ahead; ask God to be part of the process too!
