«Drink from the brook and eat what the ravens bring you, for I have commanded them to bring you food» (1 Kings 17:4, NLT).
Only after performing his job, after presenting himself before King Ahab and prophesying about the arrival of a great drought, was Elijah given more information. Although he was constantly in communion with the Lord, God did not tell him ahead of time how He would provide for him during the three and a half years of drought, instead He led him step by step. First, He told him: «Hide by Kerith Brook. . .. Drink from the brook and eat what the ravens bring you» (1 Kings 17:3, 4, NLT).
As twenty-first century women, we cannot perceive how strange this idea is. God provided by means of unclean animals! He could have ordered some doves to feed Elijah, but He chose for every bite of bread and meat Elijah ate to come from the beak of an unclean animal. God provided in an unexpected way, forcing him to give up his prejudice. After some time, Kerith Brook dried up. Elijah must have seen the level of water go down day by day, not knowing what would happen after that. When there was no longer any water to drink, God gave him new directives: «Go and live in the village of Zarephath, near the city of Sidon. I have instructed a widow there to feed you» (1 Kings 17:9, NLT).
Sometimes we do exactly as God says, and then the river dries up. A friendship, our health, or money disappear and we wonder if God has forgotten us. Nevertheless, the Lord can guide us, opening and closing doors, through fast flowing rivers as well as dry river beds. God had a much greater plan (that included saving a widow and her son), and Elijah might not have left his hiding place if the brook had not dried
When we allow God to lead us, we usually have a limited idea of what that implies. We think God should provide at the time and manner we expect, preferably without unpleasant surprises or change of plans. When that does not happen, we become discouraged, thinking God has forgotten us. However, God leads us step by step, opening and closing doors, providing in the most unexpected ways.
Dear Lord, I want to trust in Your plans.
You can lead me in thousands of ways I cannot imagine.
