«Do not remember the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing, now it shall spring forth; shall you not know it? I will even make a road in the wilderness and rivers in the desert» (Isaiah 43:18, 19).
When I buy a new dress, I always take an old garment out of the wardrobe and give it away. I don’t want to have one of those closets crammed with clothes which can’t even be opened. I like to make room for the new. I don’t know when I started this practice, but I’m already so used to it that it’s something automatic; before I put something new in the closet, I always take out something old. I’m trying to do the same thing on a spiritual level: prepare myself for changes by making emotional space.
We all have a mental and emotional bandwidth. Like a computer, there is a limit to the number of things we can handle simultaneously. Sometimes, in order to receive something new without collapsing, we need to delete a file. Sometimes we have to open our hands and get rid of that old toy so God can give us something new and better.
In Just Enough Light for the Step I’m On, Stormie Omartian wrote, «When God points in a new direction, we must abandon everything we knew and be willing to embrace the uncertainty and trust that He will sustain us on the journey.» With the doors of my wardrobe open, with a new garment in my hands, it’s easy to get rid of an old garment. The real challenge is to let go of the old before receiving the new by faith. However, as Ellen G. White wrote in The Ministry of Healing, as we yield, as we let go, we are blessed. «We are never called upon to make a real sacrifice for God. Many things He asks us to yield to Him, but in doing this we are but giving up that which hinders us in the heavenward way. Even when called upon to surrender those things which in themselves are good, we may be sure that God is thus working out for us some higher good.»—ch. 40, p. 473.
Let us trust in God’s supreme generosity. Let us let go, give in, create spaces to receive the new.
Dear Lord, I want to receive the changes You want to make in my life with open hands and a willing heart. If there are things I need to let go of today to create a space, including mental attitudes like victimhood or pessimism, please show them to me. I trust Your kindness and generosity. Amen.
