WORK
Daniel belonged to the Hebrew nobility when Nebuchadnezzar Il invaded Jerusalem in 604 B.C. He was taken captive to Babylon when he was still a teenager. There he studied in the main schools for captives and then entered the court’s service. From the start of his working life, Daniel was very committed to his job. Whenever his advice was required, he wouldn’t rest until he had gathered the most complete information to give the monarch in charge the broadest overview so he could make the best decision, In spite of not sharing the same ideological principles, the Hebrew young man always maintained a remarkable loyalty toward his superiors. His attitude even helped him remain in his job position when his «boss» changed, upon the Babylonian Empire’s fall to the Medo-Persian army, the night of October 12, 539 B.C.
The new «boss» came with his own team, whom Daniel didn’t find very pleasant. But the new leader valued the experienced public servant, which is why it was inevitable for Daniel’s colleagues to envy him. But he didn’t depend on friends in high places or special help, Instead he depended on his own effort together with God’s power. So every time his adversaries launched all kinds of schemes against him, he came off well.
once had a teacher during my doctoral studies who mentioned how sad it was for him to see individuals who ascended in their work life due to their family connections or their friendship with key people. Then he looked me straight in the eye and, with a smile, said, «Life and university will some day charge all of them for their attitude.» It’s true. At some point they’ll face situations that will expose their incompetence and it will be clear that the way they obtained their job post was not the wisest.
Another of my teachers at the Theological Seminary told us we didn’t have to wait until we had a job that implied great responsibility to show a passion for work. Instead, we had to make the greatest effort wherever we were, no matter how simple it was, What a great truth!.
How do you expect to triumph in your work life? Thanks to your friend’s or family’s «leverage»? It would be best through a job well done, revealing your character and personal convictions.
