«The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and sowed in his field, which indeed is the least of all the seeds» (Matthew 13:31, 32).
What is the first image that comes to mind when you think of success? The president of a company, dressed according to the latest fashion? An Internet billionaire, like Zuckerberg? Perhaps Theresa of Calcutta, or Nelson Mandela? If you are like me, the thought of someone who lives an ordinary life that is not at all glamorous.
We are immersed in a consumer society, conditioned to believe that being successful means living an extraordinary, brilliant life, and causing envy on social media. Since we are defined by being obsessed with fame, an «ordinary» life seems mediocre. But what if we are mistaken?
“People tend to believe that the pathway to significance is paved with the big, the showy and the grand,» writes Christian author Michael Kelly in his book Boring. “But what if we’re wrong? What if «bigness» is not an accurate measure of significance? What if the whole idea of «ordinary» is a myth? And what if a life of great importance isn’t found by escaping the details but embracing them?» The Bible teaches us that God measures our success according to our faithfulness, and that our faithfulness is exercised in the small details (see Luke 16:10).
Jesus, heaven’s most extraordinary gift, seemed ordinary at first sight. He was born in a humble home, grew up in a small village and worked as a craftsman. Although He was God incarnate, Jesus never refused to do small tasks. He washed His disciples’ feet with His own hands. That humble task, which the disciples did not want to do, makes a loving impact we still feel today, many years later.
Remember: small and ordinary things are important. A small mosquito buzzing in your room can transform your night, A tiny grain of sand in your eye interrupts your routine, no matter how rich or poor you are. And from an insignificant mustard seed, a tree where birds can build their nests (Matthew 13:31, 32).
Jesus, thank You for setting me free from the fear
of living an ordinary life. I do not need to be extraordinary or for people to adulate me, in order to have a purpose and a mission. Please help me to do my best in small tasks today.
Help me to see that, in the kingdom of God, small things have a big impact.
