SISTER AND THE SNAKES

Australia is known for beautiful beaches, towering rock formations, and something a little less appealing—snakes. Heather lived in a small town surrounded by wild and beautiful countryside. One day her grandmother had hung clothes out to dry and asked Heather to bring them in from the line. The girl had just begun working when she heard a soft hiss in the grass nearby. Looking down, she froze. Slipping among the blades was a dreaded brown snake, a highly poisonous breed of viper. Heather glanced in the direction of her little brother’s playpen farther out in the yard. She noticed that he was sticking his chubby arm through the slats, reaching for something. Inches from his hand lay a deadly black snake. «Grandfather!» Heather screamed running toward the porch where she grabbed the only weapon she could find—a broom. «Grandfather! Snakes!»

A man appeared on the porch, took one look at his frantic granddaughter, and then rushed back into the house. By now, Heather was at the playpen, pushing her little brother away from the viper and beating the snake with her broom. The creature coiled in confusion. Grandfather reappeared, rifle in hand. Soon both uninvited visitors were dead, and Heather and her brother were safe.

It takes courage to run in the direction of great danger, armed only with a broom, to save someone’s life. But that’s what Heather and Jesus did. They both faced a deadly serpent in order to save others. No, Jesus didn’t have a broom. He was carrying a cross.
