A quick-tempered person does foolish things, and the one who devises evil schemes is hated.
PROVERBS 14:17, NIV
I’ve been blessed with the opportunity of visiting Mount St. Helens several times in recent years. Every time I go, I explore a new part of this mountain. Mount St. Helens is a volcano in the state of Washington. On May 18, 1980, it erupted violently. An earthquake triggered a landslide, and then the mountaintop exploded, releasing tons of energy. Because of this huge event, the area around Mount St Helens has been turned into a national monument, preserving the history of what happened there and providing a great place to learn about volcanoes.
The first time, we visited Johnson Ridge, an overlook right in front of the mile-wide crater. The second time, we drove to back side of the mountain and hike to the rim. On the third trip there, we decided to get closed-up look at the middle of the crater, so we found a company nearby that offered helicopter tours to the crater. After buying our tickets, we arrived at the designated time, the pilot gave us a brief safety talk, and then we took off.
Helicopters are usually not very roomy inside, but the doors and even part of the floors on this one were transparent, allowing us to see below and all around us. The helicopter lifted off and sped toward the volcano, flying over the South Fork Toutle River and up the mountain to the crater. In the center of the crater there’s a lava dome where new lava continues to come out.
People with short tempers are explosive, like volcanoes. You never know when they’re going to blow up, and there’s usually some damage to deal with afterward.
God says people with short tempers end up doing foolish things because they do not have self-control. Oftentimes people get hurt because we say something we don’t mean. Be wise: ask God to help you think before you speak.
