People often ask me if I’m wealthy when they learn how much traveling I do. I can tell you with all assurance that I am not wealthy. In college I learned that there were secrets to traveling on a shoestring budget. I decided early on that I would be willing to travel under very non-luxurious conditions in order to travel and see as much of the world as I could. Shortly after getting married, my wife and I decided to travel to the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. By going in the off-season, we were able to find extremely cheap airline tickets to the city of Cancun. At the airport, we took the bus to the city center and found a cheap hotel that most of you would probably never dream of staying in. It was a bit rough by our standards since there was no air conditioning and the bathroom was down the hall.
The first day there, we paid less than a dollar to take the bus to a beautiful nearby beach. Another day we went down to the local bus station to see how far the local bus would go. It turns out that one of them went several hours west near the ruins of Chichén Itzá. It was only a few dollars, so we went for it. Traveling with the locals was fun, and we met interesting people along the way. We made it to the Mayan ruins and spend expansive, and we spend hours upon hours walking around, climbing things, and entering structures that were almost one thousand five hundred years old. We had a wonderful adventure together, even though we spend very little money taking this trip.
As you grow, be careful that you aren’t driven to love money. It’s true that we need money to live, but don’t let it be the center of your life. Instead, let your life with God be the ultimate adventure, because it will bring you true happiness and joy that money simply cannot buy.
