SHOE DANCE

EVERYDAY OBJECTS

“YOU have turned my mourning into joyful dancing. You have taken away my clothes of mourning and clothed me with joy, that I might sing praises to you and not be silent. O Lord my God, I will give you thanks forever!» (Psalm 30:11, 12)

William and I had a conversation on a cloudy day. He had his workshop, but he preferred to spend the day painting in the busy cobblestone sidewalks of Caminito, a tourist area in Buenos Aires. Among other things, he told me he and his wife danced all over the world on a white cloth they spread out on the floor. They placed paint on the soles of their shoes and let the tango rhythm reflect itself on that canvas while they swayed with that intimate and international movement. When the accordion sound ended and they stopped dancing, a musical painting was immortalized, with a mixture of stiletto and broad square heel marks.

When I think of shoes, I like to think of the road they’ve travelled. They probably have so many stories to tell!

They’ve witnessed falls, missteps, triumphs and opportunities, and they leave behind an imprint that somehow makes us «immortal, » even if just for a while, in the life of those around us. There may be clumsy, imperfect dancing, through attempts, at times with sublime success and at others with resounding failure.

But the final picture may motivate us to persevere and will be ever more beautiful if it reflects the image of Him who created us, who gives us strength when it’s lacking, who invented colors, music and through them allows us to draw something even if we’re not entirely sure of what we’re doing; even if we don ‘t know what it is that He sees in us, even if we don ‘t know that He sees us…

What’s left behind when the accordion stops and the paint is used up?

Our lives, as Christians, should leave a positive imprint; and the apostle Paul, paraphrasing the prophet Isaiah, extends an invitation to us, “But how can they call on him to save them unless they believe in him? And how can they believe in him if they have never heard about him? And how can they hear about him unless someone tells them? And how will anyone go and tell them without being sent? That is why the Scriptures say, ‘How beautiful are the feet of messengers who bring good news!’” (Romans 10:14, 15).

God wants to record a happy dance with your life today. He wants to give good news through you and your willing feet.
