«The path of the righteous is like the morning sun, shining ever brighter till the full light of day» Proverbs 4:18, NM.
THE APOSTLE JAMES says that in God «there is no variation or shadow of turning» (James 1:17); and Hebrews adds that our Lord «is the same yesterday, today, and forever» (Hebrews 13:8). By contrast, we—we who vary, fluctuate, always change our minds, and constantly grow— sometimes boast of a stasis, a paralysis, that keeps us from progressing and growing. And we often justify that behavior with a rather weak argument, claiming we do it because God does not change.
An incident that happened to Melancthon, Luther’s inseparable companion, helps illustrate what I am trying to say. Melancthon was presenting his ideas about a topic, and one of his listeners denounced that what he was saying at that time differed from what he himself had taught years before. The reformer replied in a way I believe is masterful: «Sir, do you think I have been studying assiduously for thirty years without learning anything?»
Ellen G. White said,
A genuine religious experience unfolds and intensifies. Continual advancement, increasing knowledge and power in the word of God, is the natural result of a vital connection with God. The light of holy love will grow brighter and brighter unto the perfect day.*
Has your experience with God unfolded and intensified? Your answer to this question will depend on how much you have progressed in the knowledge of the Word. You can’t just say, «But that’s what I was taught as a young child!» A relationship with Jesus is one of continuous growth and progress. We will continue to change «till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ» (Ephesians 4:13).
Solomon referred to our continuous progress by stating that «the path of the just is like the shining sun, that shines ever brighter unto the perfect day» (Proverbs 4:18). Being a Christian means traveling down a path in life that becomes ever brighter for us and those around us. If at any time you are called to change your mind, don’t worry; the important thing is for the light of God’s Word to continue to grow in you and light your way.
