When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, “Surely he was the son of God!” MATTHEW 22:54
The first summer I spent in Southern California with my parents was interesting because every week I went to work and church-never seeing nearby sight. At the end of the summer I went back to school in Michigan, but I soon returned for Christmas break. As soon as I got home I was shocked to see what I had missed all summer- a mountain practically in my backyard! Because of poor air quality that summer, I had never noticed that there was a mountain a couple of miles away from my house! It had been hidden by smog. Several years later, I returned and was happy to see that the quality of the air had slowly improved.
That first summer, I had another experience that was a bit shocking too. I worked as an intern in architecture office in a town called Redlands. I had only been at work for about thirty minutes when something happened that I had never experience before. As I sat at my desk working, suddenly felt a strange sensation as if everything around me was moving. I looked up and Looked around, then I looked out the window right next to me. It’s hard to wave. I then realized I was experiencing earthquake-my first earthquake! It only lasted about forty-five seconds, but it was an unusual experience.
When my father was a boy living in Chile, he survived two earthquakes, but those were massive, and tens of thousands of people lost their lives.
The Bible talks about earthquakes in several places. When Jesus died there was an earthquake, and when He rose from the dead there was another earthquake.
The Bible tells us that earthquakes will be signs that Jesus’ return is soon. We don’t need to be afraid, because the Creator of the earth can protect us even from earthquakes.
