SHADOWY SCARE!

Alice and Jeanie lived in the country where they enjoyed roaming the fields and taking care of their pet horse.

One day Mother became ill and had to go to the hospital. Daddy wasn’t home at the time, so the two sisters decided to stay at a neighbor’s farm at night. «Remember to hurry home after school to feed and comb the horse,» their mother instructed. «Then you’ll have plenty of time to get to the neighbors’ before dark.»

The two girls kept to the schedule for a few days, then got so involved in a ball game one afternoon that the sun was setting by the time they reached home. When they finally headed out for the neighbor’s house a half mile away, it was dark.

Grabbing the little lantern hanging by the back door, they left, but the going was slow. The lantern didn’t give off much light. The girls were nervous. Someone had sighted a mountain lion in the area, and a mental institution nearby was always reporting that someone had escaped.

Suddenly Alice screamed. There in the shadows, over against the fence, was a low, dark form swaying back and forth. It grew as they came nearer and moved as they moved. «Is it a monster?» the girl gasped.

Then a puff of wind blew Jeanie’s skirt, and the lantern’s light chased the «monster» away. They’d been frightened by the shadow of her skirt on an old wooden gate.

King David called the Bible a light shining on his path.

Sometimes that light reveals the shadows of our sins.

But remember, the same light that casts a shadow can chase it away.
