SERVING GOD PART 1

SERVICE

«And the King will answer and say to them: ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me’      (Matthew 25:40).

Fleeing the misery and war in countries like Syria, Afghanistan, and Eritrea, in the past years, thousands of people rushed to boats at sea, to immigrate to other countries with better opportunities. The enormous amount of immigrants arriving in Europe in such a short time period, caused turmoil in the international community. Some boats and rafts shipwrecked in route, leaving gut-wrenching images of children and adults who lost their lives due to the lack of appropriate help. However; in the midst of this humanitarian crisis, anonymous citizens showed compassion by coming to the aid of the needy. Volunteers from various countries brought clothes and food to the newcomers. A group of doctors deployed an operation to offer free assistance to the immigrants. A woman undressed her baby to cover a stranger’s baby. A strong man rescued from the strong waves more than twenty survivors of a shipwreck and when the media lauded him as a hero, Antonis Deligiorgis answered: «I only did what I had to.»

In the Gospel of Matthew, Christ says that at His return, He will judge the nations. In glory and majesty, He will gather all the nations and separate the righteous from the ungodly. He will say to the righteous ones, «Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: for I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me» (Matt. 25:34-40). The judgment ends with a sad sentence for the ungodly or those who ignored the pain and needs of others: they will be left out of the Kingdom of God (vv. 41-46).

The difference between those who serve God and those who do not serve Him cannot be found in religion, theories, or doctrines. The love for others that is manifested in their daily life is what distinguishes the true servants of the Most High God. If Christ came today, which group would you belong to? Have you helped those who have great needs? Have you extended a helping hand to the forsaken and the afflicted? When you help and love your neighbor, God see it as you helping and loving Him.
